Could Mastodon be the new Twitter?
You can’t have missed it: Elon Musk takes over social network Twitter. Some people fear it’s getting too politically right, others fear the idea that everyone needs to be verified. Do you belong to one of those groups and do you want to try a different social medium, or do you just want something new? Mastodon is this week’s App of the Week.
Mastodon
Mastodon looks a lot like Twitter, but not exactly on the inside. It has the great unique feature that it is not after your data. Other social media work like this: you provide your data and in return you can use those networks. Mastodon works differently, but is therefore also less accessible. You can easily access it and create an account, but fully understanding how it works is another matter.
Mastodon is a decentralized social network on which you log in to servers, as it were. So it is not a straightforward solution. Yet it has many millions of users. It’s recommended that you take a look at joinmastodon.org for a little more context on how to use it and which community to join. For example, Mastodon.online is a server that you can choose for the first use. You can always switch.
A Twitter Alternative
After all, it’s a lot like Twitter after all: you can follow people, post messages and use all the little tricks you know about the blue bird: favorite a post, ‘retweet’ posts, and so on. Everything else is quite simple: you see the posts of people you follow, you can post things yourself, and so on. For example, via the map you can then see who is active on that ‘server’ and find new people to follow.
If you carefully search for which servers suit you, Mastodon can certainly be a great added value for you, especially if you value privacy. Can it catch up with Twitter, especially now that it’s shaken to its foundations by one Mr. Musk? Probably not. Twitter has now become such an established order, people don’t want to start over if they already have something where all their followers, old messages and photos can be seen. But one thing’s for sure: it’s going to get a lot of new followers because of all the events and fuss surrounding Twitter.
