Cortana app will disappear from Windows 10 and 11
It was expected. Almost on the heels of Copilot’s announcement, Microsoft officially announces ending the application Cortana for Windows 10 and 11. The assistant will no longer be available on Microsoft OS at the end of the current year. It must be said that Cortana, which had already been kicked out of the Android and iOS platforms in 2019, is no match for Copilot, a new assistant boosted by ChatGPT, which turns out to be much more powerful and knows how to respond more or less to any kind of queries.
If the end of the Cortana application is therefore already scheduled, the assistant will however remain available within Outlook Mobile and in the Teams application (including Teams Rooms). Cortana’s daily briefing in Outlook has been rebranded as Microsoft Viva. Microsoft does not really want to dwell on the “leftovers” of Cortana and even pushes the Windows user towards Copilot and the integrated AIs: “You can still access powerful productivity features in Windows and Edge, which have enhanced AI capabilities.” And for those who have not understood, Microsoft recalls the advantages of Copilote over the old, now outdated assistant: “Instead of clicking on the Cortana icon and launching the app to switch to voice mode, you can now use voice directly and meet your productivity needs through various tools.”
It only took a few months for Microsoft to deeply integrate the GPT language model into its operating system and its flagship applications, thus retiring its Cortana assistant, who was just 8 years old. A fine example of rapid technological adaptation.
