[Communiqué] Sygic GPS Navigation – Misdirection warnings

Sygic GPS Navigation brings a cloud-based solution to quickly detect oncoming drivers and warn you of their presence

About 4,500 accidents are caused each year by wrong-way drivers on European freeways – this problem also results in more than one death per day on average on American freeways. To increase drivers’ awareness on highways, Sygic brings Bosch’s cloud-based wrong-way driving warning service to their GPS navigation in the EU, US and Canada.

Behind Sygic GPS Navigation’s new safety feature is an intelligent solution that immediately warns you and other potentially endangered road users of oncoming driving. Over the last twelve months, the contraflow driver detection system has assessed more than 3.3 billion routes in the EU and, of these, more than 300 contraflow drivers have been detected and warned.

Sygic GPS Navigation will be the first consumer navigation system in the United States and Canada to integrate Bosch-designed, cloud-based warning of wrong-way driving. If a vehicle or smartphone using the service is heading in the wrong direction on a highway, the system will detect it in seconds and warn the driver traveling in the opposite direction, as well as other motorists in danger, of the existence of a critical situation.

“The digital transmission of information takes place in real time and as quickly as possible. We see this feature as a great addition to the traffic reports broadcast on the radio. It is especially useful for travelers heading to unfamiliar destinations and for locals taking new routes. “says Sygic’s Lukas Dermek.

Thanks to anonymized data, regularly transmitted to the cloud by vehicles and applications equipped with the integrated system, all drivers within the perimeter and those driving in the opposite direction can be informed. An alert can be sent within 10 seconds of detection.

With the launch of the service in the application of Sygic GPS Navigation, the number of users and, therefore, the possibility of detecting wrong-way drivers, will increase significantly, because the application of Sygic GPS Navigation has 2, 5 million monthly active users.

“Our goal is to bring our cloud-based wrong-way driver alert system to as many road users as possible – it’s our interpretation of the phrase ‘invented for life’. We are happy that Sygic GPS Navigation users can now benefit from our service,” Explain Lars Mueller, Product Manager at Bosch.

Sygic decided to implement this cloud-based feature, designed by Bosch, to improve the security features of consumer GPS navigation. This is an additional “lifesaver” for Android and iOS users, as the system helps to better inform motorists, who can then drive more predictably. The feature deploys online and provides real-time hazard warnings along the driver’s route. It is free and can be deactivated at any time.
