China puts gigantic solar and wind parks in the desert into operation

In order to cover its energy needs in the long term, China is constantly developing new concepts and, above all, relies on sustainable energy. Now a gigantic solar and wind park in a desert has started operation.

In the fight against climate change, we are increasingly running out of time. But the worst effects could probably still be mitigated. Many governments around the world are now realizing this and are developing ambitious climate targets – including China.

Because the People’s Republic wants completely climate-neutral by 2060 at the latest be. In 2021, the country was still emitting around a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. So there is an ambitious path ahead of those responsible in Beijing. In order for the country to achieve its goals in 37 years, there are now huge solar and wind farms.

China puts gigantic solar and wind farms into operation

The new project has now officially started operations. It is located in the southern part of the Gobi Desert and has a capacity of one million kilowatts. According to the operator, the complete system generates around 1.8 billion kilowatt hours per year. That is enough to supply about 1.5 million households with energy.

And that is only a small part of what all projects should achieve together. If all solar and wind parks planned so far in China go into operation, the capacity should be 13 million kilowatts. With this, the Chinese government wants to get significantly closer to its own goals.

Projects cost up to 11.17 billion euros

Overall, the solar and wind projects cost the country around 11.17 billion euros. In the long term, the costs should therefore be lower than the catastrophic consequences of possible global warming. The regions of Ningxia, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia play a crucial role in this.

The expansion of renewable energies is obviously also progressing in China. However, it remains to be seen whether the country can meet its own climate targets by 2060. Because solar and wind farms should not be the only construction sites.
