Cheap e-car? VW boss has a bitter pill for bargain hunters
VW relies on old values for its new electric cars: The Stromer should be cheaper. The plan is one thing, but implementation is a long time coming. VW boss Oliver Blume knows that too – and he’s stepping on the brakes.
VW boss: cheap e-cars need more time
With the ID.2 Volkswagen wants it 2025 bring an electric car onto the market, which in terms of price depends on everything that has been available from the Wolfsburg company so far. The smallest member of the ID family is to appear for less than 25,000 euros – at least that is the plan.
Incidentally, during the presentation of the concept for the ID.2all, you also have a even cheaper e-car in prospect posed: For under 20,000 euros it should be so far from 2026, announced brand boss Thomas Schäfer. As it looks now, he could have galloped ahead too quickly, because CEO Oliver Blume grabs the reins.
“Perspective we have the right, too To offer electric models under 20,000 euros and earn money with it,” says the group boss (source: Manager Magazin via Ecomento). But he also makes it clear that such a low price currently not realistic may be. This is due to the high production costs, for example due to expensive preliminary products such as the e-car battery.
ID.1 not a mini e-car: Inexpensive, but not tiny
An economically sensible, i.e. profitable model for less than 20,000 euros is simply not possible at the moment. How and by when this could change remains to be seen. But we get a closer look at how she imagines VW to have such a cheap Stromer: “At the moment we have no intention of going in that direction,” explains Blume when asked what based on the current VW Up was planned.
VW shows a brief insight in the ID.2all video:
So if the cheap e-car actually becomes a reality, it should obviously not follow in the footsteps of WV’s microcar. Since the ID.2 already occupies the position of the Polo, at least in terms of dimensions, there is still unclear what exactly we could expect from a possible cheap ID.1.
