Chantal forgot to put her children to bed: ‘Fireman Sam on repeat’

Sure there is sometimes a fuss about screens, but most mothers are secretly overjoyed that these things exist. However, sometimes things go wrong. This is also the case with Chantal (32), mother of Niels (5) and Finn (4).
“Our children rarely play with the iPad, but they can always watch a movie on TV before going to sleep.

It was Saturday, we had friends over for the barbecue, the sun was shining and we were drinking rosé. I decided to feed and shower Niels and Finn a little earlier than usual, and parked them on the bench in front of Fireman Sam so I could catch up undisturbed with our friends. Just for half an hour, then my friend or I would put them to bed. The barbecue was smoking, we played music in the garden, it felt like a holiday.

To forget
Until at half past nine I shouted to my friend, ‘Oh no, the boys! Did you put them to bed?’ Confused, his plate of meat still in his hand, he looked at me. Guys? Bed?
In the living room I found them fast asleep on the couch, Fireman Sam on repeat. I ordered my friend to quietly transfer them to their beds and solemnly agreed with the children in my mind that I would not complain about an extra long story the next day.”
