Chantal Bles and Robert Doornbos candid about the illness of daughter Jada: ‘I went crazy’

“April 24, 2018. That is a date that you will not soon forget. Diagnosis of cancer in your daughter, terrible,” says Robert. When they get the bad news, he’s in London for work. Chantal, who is twenty weeks pregnant with Josh at the time, goes to the hospital with Jada. The doctor who examines Jada immediately knows that things are wrong, Chantal hears afterwards. “They did an ultrasound. I saw them measure things. Then I thought: hmm, why are you measuring things? But you want to stay positive for your little one who is tense there,” she says.

Bad news

After consultation, the doctors return in pairs. “He says, ‘I’m going to say it right away: it’s not good. Your daughter is very seriously ill. She has a tumor of twelve by twelve centimeters on her kidney, with possible metastases.’” The ground drops from under Chantal’s feet. “I started screaming, I started hitting him. No no no. Vibrate, unbelievable.” She wants to call Robert, but is so shocked that she gives her phone to the doctor. “I sat on the floor, I went crazy,” says Robert. After a lot of hassle, he manages to fly to the Netherlands that same day. “And then you sleep in a Ronald McDonald house at night. what the fuck† This morning my world looked very different.”

Heavy time

Chantal is heavily pregnant when Jada undergoes a ten-hour operation and undergoes chemotherapy. They therefore decide to get Josh earlier by cesarean section. But that doesn’t go as expected. “He ended up in intensive care, where we were with Jada a few weeks before.” Fortunately, it ends well in the end. Robert looks back on a moment that will stay with him forever. “The first time you walk with her in a park, a breeze blows and tufts of hair blow away. You will not soon forget that.” A month ago, Jada was hospitalized again, this time with a double stomach virus. She is now doing better. “We’ve been through a lot with that little one, but we enjoy every day.”
