Capacities from solar systems will increase by 90 gigawatts in 2022

Will we succeed in phasing out coal-based power generation within the next ten years? Both politicians and experts have been asking this question for some time in order to find out to what extent climate targets can be achieved in the near future. In order for such an exit to work as soon as possible, however, there is still a lot to be done in the field of renewable energies.

Because even if an additional 4,890 megawatts were generated by the construction of solar systems in 2020, the current capacities are still far from sufficient to continue our expansion meet increasing energy demand. At the end of 2020 we were getting 51.4 terawatt hours from the sun but have on the other side in about 559 terawatt hours consumed.

The difference has to come from other energy sources, which is why coal still plays such a big role. We could learn a lot from China, where some ambitious goals have been set for 2022. Because the additional yield from solar systems should increase by up to 90 gigawatts.

A corridor of 75 to 90 gigawatts is specifically planned, but both values ​​would overshadow the expansion last year. Because in 2021 the People’s Republic “only” connected capacities of 54.88 gigawatts to the grid. This means that around 306 gigawatts of solar power capacity are available today.

However, the ambitious goals set this year are not the end. Between 2022 and 2025, the annual expansion is expected to increase to up to 99 gigawatts per year. To do this, you take advantage of one thing in particular.

Because a large part of the expansion happens on existing structures. Existing buildings and other structures are to be built over with solar systems, new areas are not necessarily necessary with this approach. The energy transition is not only picking up speed in Germany or Europe, but also on the other side of the world.
