‘Can I force my children to wear sundresses?’

Sometimes you can’t figure it out on your own and you could use some advice. Every Tuesday a reader therefore tells about her dilemma.

Daniëlle (34) is married to Rick (35) and mother of Deon (9) and Jarno (8).

“Big boys wear cool swimming shorts, according to my children. Ever since we went on holiday to a large, entertainment-packed campground last summer where they made tons of friends, they’ve suddenly started to care about what they look like.

I usually don’t have a firm opinion about that, but when it comes to swimwear I’m serious. I do not want my children to hang out in and around the pool without UV-resistant swimwear. I’ve had skin cancer twice, my children have the same predisposition.

Awkward

It’s no fun putting them in the factor 50 every time from head to toe. That creates drama, not to mention the inconvenience for my husband and me. The solution: UV-resistant swimwear. But the refuse to wear them. Awkward, stupid, doesn’t sit well. ‘Skin cancer isn’t good!’, I once screeched furiously, but it made no impression at all.

UV-resistant clothing

I don’t want every vacation day to be a struggle. But I’m afraid I’ll have to threaten consequences if they continue to refuse. Then no more swimming pool visits, and visit a village every day. At the same time, I hardly see children of their age in such clothes. Am I going overboard with my concerns about their health and having to put up with a lot of rubbing, or is there some way I can convince my boys to wear UV shirts?”
