Can ChatGPT pass a German Abitur?

ChatGPT has also stirred up some dust in the education sector. But could artificial intelligence also pass a German Abitur? The Bayerischer Rundfunk tested exactly that.

The currently hyped AI ChatGPT has caused a sensation, especially in schools and universities. Because in many cases it is hardly verifiable whether the software has created a presentation or a term paper.

Philipp Gawlik and Christian Schiffer from Bayerischer Rundfunk therefore asked themselves whether the AI software would also be able to pass the Bavarian Abitur. ChatGPT had to take the exam in four subjects.

Can ChatGPT pass the Bavarian Abitur?

Mathematics, German, history and computer science – the BR ChatGPT tested these four subjects. The exam questions came from the Bavarian Abitur, which is known to be particularly difficult.

The test was carried out by Philipp Gawlik and Christian Schiffer, who work as computer linguists in BR’s AI & Automation Lab. After answering, they then gave the exam answers to high school teachers for correction.

What did the test look like?

In order for ChatGPT to be able to face the Abitur in the first place, the exams had to be adjusted a bit. Because sometimes the Abitur questions are too long for the AI software.

Therefore, ChatGPT was confronted with the Abitur questions from the 2022 exams. Some of these had to be reformulated.

This also had the advantage that the responses from the software were sufficient. Because when she was confronted with the entire question, the answers were sometimes much too short.

How does ChatGPT do in math, German and Co.?

While the past few weeks have mainly been about what the AI software masters with flying colours, the Bavarian Abitur looks rather mixed. There is no common thread running through the results, as performance varies from subject to subject.

The AI does not pass German, it would only have earned 03 grade points with its performance – i.e. a 5+. The German Abi 2022 was about a text about the skills of artificial intelligence by journalist and communication scientist Miriam Meckel.

According to the controlling German teacher, the AI ”captured the author’s basic intentions”. However, the “execution fell far short of the requirements”.

Things are going just as badly in math and computer science. In mathematics, the AI would have passed with a 4-, but in computer science the software only got 02 grade points, i.e. a 5.

However, things are going much better for the AI in history – but only in individual tasks. Because the answers of the AI would “vary within the Abitur”, according to the responsible teacher. This is often not the case with students.

Overall, ChatGPT passes the Abitur in history with 09 grade points – i.e. a straight 3.
