Apple is again improving the camera of the new iPhones this year. What’s better about the new LiDAR sensor for the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) camera?

iPhone 15 Pro gets a better camera
As every year, Apple is working on a better camera for the new series of iPhones. According to the usually reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Sony is now taking over the parts supply for the LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) sensor of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Previously, this delivery was in the hands of Lumentum and Win Semi.

With LiDAR sensors it is possible to use 3D techniques with your iPhone, such as measuring distances in your environment or using Augmented Reality (AR). Using light, this technique calculates how long it takes to reach an object or person and return to the source. In practice, you use LiDAR to measure someone’s height, or for AR apps.
This is getting better with the LiDAR sensors
With the iPhone 12 Pro (Max), the iPhone 13 Pro (Max) and the iPhone 14 Pro (Max), the LiDAR scanner is located in the black dot on the camera island. This is no different with the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. With the acquisition of Sony, the operation of the sensor is slightly adjusted. However, according to Kuo, these are not major changes.
According to the Apple analyst, the changes mainly have to do with the battery of your iPhone. The new LiDAR components use energy more efficiently, so your iPhone battery lasts longer. The new sensors also perform better, while using less energy than the previous sensors. Thanks to the new LiDAR sensor, you can take photos with your iPhone for longer.
