Cycling with Apple Maps now easier in the US
It’s been possible since iOS 14; bike navigation for the designated bike routes in the US on Apple Maps. Now Apple has added several cities to the navigation app’s list: Detroit, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Charleston. You can now also plan your cycling trip in these cities, taking into account differences in height and the traffic on the road.
Earlier it was already possible with Apple Maps to take the bike throughout California, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, London, Barcelona and in China. According to Justin O’Beirne, a map blogger, 26 percent of the US territory is now covered with this bike navigation. In addition, more than half of the population of the United States (about 52%) lives in the covered area, so quite a few people can already take advantage of this feature.
According to O’Beirne, the next update will be Texas and the Southeastern States. But, where is this handy function for our little country?
More bicycles than people in the Netherlands
If you ask an average Dutch person what really defines us, there is a good chance that ‘cycling’ is among the first three answers. So why does Apple Maps ignore the special bicycle navigation for our country? The cycling mecca of the world, with more steel horses than people, in our opinion deserves more than the US to get this function.
Especially when Apple realizes that we don’t need those handy extras at all; it’s completely flat here, so the elevation changes don’t need a special update. In addition, we have our own special bicycle paths that are separated from the highway. This means that it is of no use to us to know whether it is busy in these lanes. We do cycle anyway.
Apple Cards, when is it our turn?
All Apple has to do is ‘just’ scan all cycling routes in the Netherlands and integrate them into the Maps app. If the company does not do this quickly, everyone will soon cycle to the competitor Google Maps. This is because it already has the option to display bicycle paths and to load a bicycle route in our little country. Plus, it recently rolled out three really useful new features. So Apple: fix this quickly!
