You should not hesitate long with the booking. On the one hand, the trains are likely to be very full at Christmas time, on the other hand, the cheap saver price tickets are often sold out quickly. The tickets for the winter timetable have been unlocked on October 12th. The routes for the Christmas holidays and New Year’s Eve are now available for booking. The saver price tickets are usually available at prices from 20 to 30 euros. The more tickets are sold, the more expensive the journeys become, especially when the limited savings price contingent has been exhausted.
For example, if you book a ticket for a trip from Berlin to Stuttgart in mid-October on Monday 19 December, you will pay for the 11 a.m. trip €48. If you want to travel at the same time on Monday, October 17 at short notice, the train ticket will cost you at €115, on the other hand, more than twice as much. Deutsche Bahn: Travel cheaply at Christmas and New Year’s Eve – that’s how it could work
Deutsche Bahn has announced that it will raise prices from December 10th. Then the Christmas trips should be a bit more expensive. There will no longer be a nationwide successor to the 9-euro ticket in 2022. Only Berlin has pushed ahead and offers a 29-euro ticket, which can only be used in the capital.
Deutsche Bahn has activated ticket booking for journeys up to six months in advance. You can now plan and save on the carnival and Easter trips for 2023. Lfrom the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD) it is worth looking for train tickets, especially in the morning before 6 a.m. and in the evening after 8 p.m. Then the prices should be the lowest.
The prices are usually highest for journeys on Friday and Sunday, after all many travelers use the weekend. The passenger association “Pro Bahn” recommends above all Rides on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Saturdays before 10 a.m. and after 8 p.m. Directly before and after Christmas as well as on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the cheap train tickets should be gone the fastest and the prices correspondingly highest. Sometimes trips are cheaper if you exclude the fast ICE and only look for IC trips. If you don’t want to go that far, you can exclude long-distance trains from the search and travel cheaply with regional express trains.
When you book a ticket, you can see how busy a trip is. At the latest when the entry “High occupancy expected’ pops up, you should consider reserving a seat. This can also be booked later. However, if the train is too full, no more seats can be reserved.
