BMW refuses software update – the reason is crazy

In the UK, a BMW driver wanted to update her car’s software. But that didn’t work, instead the BMW i4 issued a strange error message. Before the installation, she should park her e-car – because an update on a slope is not planned.

BMW: Software update only after reparking

The driver of a BMW i4 in the UK was unable to install an over-the-air update for her electric car. The official justification from BMW: The car was on a slope. The owner had parked her car in front of her house, which is on a mountain. The road is too steep to install the update. She was asked to park the vehicle “on a level surface” in order to install the update.

According to the driver, there was no way to load the latest software despite the warning. No reason was given to her eitherwhy the hillside location could prevent an installation (source: Clare Eliza on Twitter).

In the meantime it has BMW commented on the curious incident. From a technical point of view, nothing speaks against an update on the mountain, said a spokesman for the Munich car manufacturer. It was a precautionary measure. In the event that the update is aborted unexpectedly, the car should be prevented from rolling on a slope.

For vehicles with an electric parking brake, the update refusal can make sense. If there is a fault in the electronics, in the worst case, release the brake and the vehicle may start to roll on sloping terrain.

Most recently, BMW presented a very special car with the i Vision Dee:
