Birgit Schuurman says candidly: ‘The chance of pregnancy was 2 to 3 percent’

The actress and her boyfriend had been trying to conceive for over a year. Birgit thought that her ‘mega-heavy’ periods could have something to do with this, but according to the gynecologist, the couple had nothing to worry about.

‘We were so sad’

After a few months, however, it turned out that there was more going on: after a conversation with a fertility doctor in Leuven, Birgit learned that she had polyps, endometriosis and adenomyosis. ‘That, together with my age and my love’s sperm count, made the doctor anything but hopeful. We also had to think about possible egg donation if we really want a baby. We were told that the chance that we could have a child together was 2 to 3 percent. We were so sad. But I also became very determined. It wasn’t 0% so there was hope!’

An attempt

Birgit did everything she could to improve the quality of her eggs, by means of supplements, but also by changing her lifestyle. Sander stopped smoking and after the polyps had been removed, they started an ICSI/IVF programme. ‘We were very lucky that we succeeded after one attempt. (…) After stopping smoking and the supplements, there were nine times more sperm cells and Sander no longer had a reduced fertility.’

The actress continues: ‘I am aware that in the end it doesn’t work for some people, no matter what they try. And that’s more than sad… But still I wanted to share this, because I think it might help some people.’
