Big surprise – a new game is coming soon

The Witcher universe is growing and growing! Anyone who is already showing withdrawal symptoms after the start of the second season on Netflix can look forward to Project Golden Nekker – the preliminary project name is a brand new single-player game that is scheduled to be released in 2022.

The Witcher: What is Project Golden Nekker?

Ever since the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Witcher Geralt of Rivia has been a fixture in the video game world and, as of this writing, is still wowing people incredible 36,000 users on Steam (Source: Steam Charts). Quite a few of them will probably be playing a game of Gwent at this very moment. And because the in-game card game is so popular, it’s getting its own offshoot this year, Project Golden Nekker.

But wait a minute! Isn’t there already an official Gwent video game? Correctly. In 2017, Gwent – The Witcher Gard Game was released as a standalone version of the card game. According to CD Projekt Red, the development team behind Project Golden Nekker, the new game fundamentally different from previous versions of the card game and offer a unique single player experience. Project Golden Nekker is therefore not an add-on, which would have been obvious and as you are used to from Blizzard’s Hearthstone, for example.

Not The Witcher 4, but a new single player experience

CD Projekt Red has been teasing the game with hints in various Gwent streams and community podcasts for several months. In this respect, it was also foreseeable for fans that the new game is not about The Witcher 4, but about something else. However, the Polish developer does not want to reveal any concrete details yet, so Paweł Burza, the Gwent Comms Lead, comments on the new game as follows:

“It’s not another Witcher Tales game, it’s something different. we want one addicting single player for players who prefer such a mode to Gwent’s competitive multiplayer.”

According to game director Vladimir Tortsov, a full reveal, including the final name, will be forthcoming soon. Until then, witcher fans can enjoy the first concept art, including the eponymous Golden Nekker and a flaming monster.

Fun Fact: Nekkers are small monsters in the Witcher world that made their first appearance in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. Compared to other creatures, however, nekkers are not particularly dangerous for Geralt. But who knows what the golden nekker is capable of?
