better bike navigation, location sharing and more

Google Maps gets a lot of improvements that should make the app even better. Improvements have been made in the area of (real-time) sharing of your location, just like for bicycle navigation and the fine ‘immersive view’ images are coming to the app.

Google Maps with new features

Google comes with a series of new features for the Google Maps app. The application gets some welcome improvements. We first see this in the sharing of your current location. When sharing your location, you can now also send the other person a notification that you have left or that you have arrived at your destination. These notifications are newly added to the possibilities.

Bike navigation

In the field of bicycle navigation, Google Maps also brings nice improvements with the summer update. The bicycle as a means of transport has become increasingly popular, according to Google, and so it is time to expand the bicycle route function. Google lets you compare different cycling routes when planning a ride. In addition, there is a section for very steep hills, which contains a graph showing the highest and lowest point of the slope.

A nice improvement with the cycling routes is that you can see what kind of road surface you encounter on your route. Think of marked cycle paths, shared paths, the roadway or something else. This is indicated in percentages. You can also see this in the route overview that you see in Google Maps.

immersive view

A new feature announced at Google I/O is Immersive View. This gives you a realistic view, with which you can discover places even better. For example, it is possible to fly over London with Big Ben or Westminster. By changing the time you get to see what it looks like in the evenings. The video below gives a nice impression of this function. Immersive View will be available for supporting locations.

Rollout

Google will roll out the new features from now on, in the coming weeks. So it may take a while until everyone can use the functionality.
