Automatically download in-app content in iOS 16.1 (about time)

Do you also find it annoying when apps first have to download (a lot of) extra data before you can use them? Games in particular also want to push the necessary updates after downloading the app. In iOS 16.1, this will change and your iPhone will be able to automatically download in-app content immediately after installing the app.

Read on after the ad.

Automatically download in-app content in iOS 16.1

It doesn’t sound like a very special feature, but if you regularly play games it is quite handy. In iOS 16.1, your iPhone will now automatically download in-app content for your apps. At least, when you turn on the new slider.

Now when you play a game like Genshin Impact download you can start the app right away, but before you can actually play you will be some time further along. The app will (after you start it) first download a mountain of extra data.

App Store: Apps have maximum file size

Well, you might be wondering why apps don’t just have all that extra data in the App Store already. That’s because apps in the App Store have a file size limit (4GB at the moment). App builders get around these limits by downloading a lot of extra data after installing the app.

The disadvantage of this is that you can often not (fully) use the app until your iPhone has finished downloading all the extra in-app data. So, for example, if you don’t have a WiFi connection on the road, you can’t download the files and use the app. Unless you get all the data via your mobile subscription, but you often don’t want that with large files.

In iOS 16.1, that will change. You can then use a slider to indicate whether your iPhone should automatically download in-app content when you install an app. If you want to use the app right away, you sometimes have to wait a little longer than usual. But the advantage is that an app is always fully updated with all in-app content.
