So (not) waterproof are the AirPods and AirPods Pro
The answer is quite simple: no, your AirPods are not waterproof. It does not matter which version you have. There are no waterproof Apple earphones available at all. The most expensive and most luxurious version, the AirPods Pro, are therefore not waterproof.
However, they are water resistant thanks to the so-called IPX4 certification. The difference between waterclosed and –resistant is subtle, but important. Water-resistant earplugs are not broken by a few drops of water or sweat.
It is not for nothing that Apple promotes the latest AirPods (third generation from 2021) by showing that you can also wear earphones during sports. However, do not do this if you have to go through a heavy rain shower. On paper, AirPods can break because of this.
Because there are now a lot of versions of the AirPods in circulation, we have indicated below which ones are or are not water resistant.
How water resistant are the AirPods?
The latest AirPods and AirPods Pro are therefore water resistant thanks to the IPX4 standard. This scale indicates how (not) waterproof a gadget is and ranges from IPX0, which is not protected at all against water, to IPX8, when a device can stay under water permanently.
The AirPods (Pro) are therefore exactly in the middle of the spectrum. This means that the Apple earbuds are splash-proof. In other words, they can withstand splashing water, for example a few raindrops or some sweat.
Gadgets only become waterproof from IPX7. So try not to drop your AirPods in the sink or swimming pool, because there is a good chance that they will not survive this dive.
AirPods (Pro) got wet? This is what you should do
Have you accidentally let your AirPods swim? Then clean the earbuds with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and let them dry. Did water get into the charging case? Then turn it upside down with the lid open, so that the ‘AirPods holder’ can drain.
Whether your AirPods (Pro) can still be saved depends on the circumstances. For example, if you have been exercising very intensively with the earplugs, there is probably little to worry about. Just take some water and let the earbuds dry, and hopefully they’ll work like you’re used to.
Did the Apple earbuds go for a ride in the washing machine, or did you accidentally drop them in the water? Then you may be less lucky. Apple strongly advises never to immerse the AirPods (Pro) in water.
Are your AirPods broken?
If your earbuds have given up the ghost, it’s best to contact Apple or the store where you bought them. Perhaps this party can mean something to you. However, don’t expect to get new AirPods just like that: Apple does not guarantee if you have let the earbuds come into contact with liquids.
You may be able to avoid these kinds of problems by purchasing a waterproof box. For 30 euros, Apple sells a special protective box in which your AirPods are protected against water. The disadvantage of this gadget is that it is of no use to you while wearing the earplugs.
