Apple’s two-tier society is becoming increasingly clear

This year, the technological difference between a regular iPhone 14 and a Pro model is becoming clearer than ever. We are currently learning about another feature that will only be reserved for buyers of a Pro model. Meanwhile, normal customers go away empty-handed, Apple’s two-class society is progressing.

A few days before Apple wants to introduce the iPhone 14 on September 7th, more details about the features of the new cell phones will be known. The always well-informed Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo claims to have learned about an improved ultra-wide-angle camera. This should have a larger sensor with larger pixels. Instead of the pixel size of 1.0µm (microns) as before, this year’s models will have pixel sizes of 1.4µm (Source: Ming Chi Kuo). The advantage: A sensor with larger pixels enables images to be recorded with more light and less noise – ideal for situations in which little light is usually available. For example, in the twilight or completely in the dark.

iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max the focus of Apple’s update strategy

Unfortunately, only the iPhone 14 Pro (6.1 inches) and the iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7 inches) will benefit from the new feature. The regular iPhone 14 (6.1-inch) and the newly-added iPhone 14 Max (6.7-inch) don’t get the ultra-wide-angle camera with an enlarged sensor. It is not the only feature that is reserved for the Pro models, so the following features are reserved for buyers of the expensive Premium versions:

  • 48 megapixel main camera
  • 8K video recording
  • Front camera with larger sensor and autofocus
  • Always-on display
  • pill-shaped front camera instead of the traditional notch
  • Apple A16 chip

On the other hand, the normal iPhone 14 with the new features looks pretty thin. The camera setup will probably correspond more or less to that of the iPhone 13, instead of a new chip, an only slightly modified Apple A15 works in the case with a little more RAM and a better GPU. The biggest novelty is the existence of a new Max model with a 6.7-inch display. But other than that, there’s not much new.

Welcome to the 2nd class

Ergo: Apple’s differences are becoming ever clearer and the two-tier society that already exists is drifting more and more apart. Pro customers can feel like true premium buyers, while regular users of an iPhone 14 are given far fewer features and therefore have to make do with second class.
