Apple Watch has more than 100 million users, will overtake the Mac in 2022

The Apple Watch has reached an important milestone, according to a reliable analyst. After a difficult start, the smartwatch has secured a place in the Apple ecosystem.

Read on after the ad.

‘Apple Watch has more than 100 million users’

The analyst Neil Cybart of Above Avalon researched Apple Watch sales and states that more than 100 million people now have one on their wrist. Apple is said to have crossed this limit in December 2020, due to the popularity of the Apple Watch Series 6 and cheaper Apple Watch SE.

The first Apple Watch hit stores in April 2015, which means it took Apple six years to reach 100 million users. What is striking about the growth is how it has increased at a rapid pace, especially in recent years.

For example, Apple sold thirty million Apple Watches in 2020, more than the numbers of 2015, 2016 and 2017 added together. Another striking finding is that one in ten iPhone owners would have an Apple Watch. “That is a remarkably high percentage, because the target group of the iPhone is extremely diverse,” says Cybart.

In fact, the Apple Watch continues to grow so well that more Watches than Macs will probably be sold from next year. The main reason for the success would be the ‘personal’ aspect. People see the Watch as a personal device because it tells them something about their health and they wear it on their wrist every day.

‘Watch popularity will only increase’

Finally, Cybart expects that the popularity of the Watch will only increase. As an example, he mentions the function that will be available with iOS 14.5. From that update, an Apple Watch can unlock your iPhone if you have a face mask on, so you don’t have to enter a passcode.
