Thanks to the new fast charging, you can charge your Apple Watch in no time. But this doesn’t work with every Watch or with all chargers. iPhoned explains everything you need to know.

Fast charging Apple Watch: These models support it

The Apple Watch may be the Apple device you need to charge most often. You wear it all day and the battery is not very large. So it is all the more important that the charging goes smoothly. That’s why the Apple Watch recently received support for fast charging. This allows you to charge the smart watch from 0 to 80% within 45 minutes.

As we mentioned, this is a fairly recent addition to the Apple Watch. That’s why only the latest models support fast charging. Below we have listed Apple Watch models with fast charging.

What do you need for fast charging your Apple Watch

A suitable cable

The aforementioned Apple Watch models come with a magnetic fast-charge to USB-C cable in the box. The difference with a ‘normal’ Apple Watch charging cable is that the edge of the housing of the ‘puck’ is made of aluminum instead of plastic.

It is of course also possible to buy this cable separately so that you can transform all your Watch charging points in your home into a fast charger. The cable is the most important part to make sure your Apple Watch’s fast charging works. If you buy such a cable from Amazon, for example, it is a good idea to check the model number. That must be A2515 – only with this you get the aluminum puck and fast charging support.

A suitable charger

The second component for fast charging your Apple Watch is the charger that you plug into the wall outlet. Fortunately, the requirements for this are somewhat lower than for the cable. Apple itself says that any USB-C charger with at least 5W and support for USB Power Delivery is capable of fast charging your Apple Watch. These are just about all chargers today – so it’s best to opt for a cheap model, for example at Bol.com.

Funnily enough, Apple’s own chargers, the MagSafe Duo and the magnetic charging dock, do not support fast charging. No, not even with the largest charging block you could find. This is probably due to the fact that these chargers were released much earlier. What is possible, however, is to plug Apple’s fast charging cable into a third-party dock.
