Apple VR glasses with three screens coming later this year

Apple will announce its much-discussed as early as the second half of 2022 VR glasses on. The Apple VR headset will have an ‘innovative display configuration’, consisting of two micro-OLED screens and a single AMOLED panel. That’s what analysts say Display Supply Chain Consultants. The glasses support both a VR mode and an AR mode.

The micro-OLED screens have a resolution of about 4000 pixels per inch. This is necessary because the screens are close to your eyes. As soon as you see pixels, the images are of course no longer realistic. The screens (or actually screens) are rumored to be only 1.4 inches in size.

The third screen, according to the analysts, is for peripheral vision. This is the part of our view that lies outside of our central, focused gaze. This may be an explanation for the use of amoled technology instead of micro-oled. Amoled screens generally have too low a pixel density for VR. But that makes little difference, because that image also has to be less sharp.

Ming-Chi Kuo adds that the VR headset uses so-called 3P pancake lenses. These have a folded design, which allows light to be reflected up and down between the screens and lenses. Thanks to this technology, Apple’s headset can become particularly light and compact.

Are you planning to purchase the Apple VR headset? Then you will probably have to dig a lot into your pocket. According to the source, the device will cost ‘several thousands of euros’. This is partly due to the advanced screen configuration. The headset is therefore mainly aimed at professionals and developers.

In addition to three screens, the VR glasses will have different cameras to record hand movements. There may also be a LiDAR sensor on board and the device will have its own chip.
