Apple still releases iOS 12 update after five years

iOS 16.3 has only just been released, but this isn’t the only iOS version that Apple is updating. An update for iOS 12 has now even appeared.

iOS 12 appeared almost five years ago

Apple released the first version of iOS 12 in 2018. This is now five years ago, but Apple released an update for the old operating system this week. This is nothing new: iOS 12 has been getting updates over the years. What’s new in iOS 12.5.7?

iOS 12 update: Focused on security

The iOS 12 update is mainly aimed at the security of the system. The system update fixes certain bugs and fixes vulnerabilities in the system. This is no different than the previous system updates for iOS 12: these have always been security updates for the past few years.

It is almost certain that the updates will stay with this, no major new versions will be released for iOS 12. iOS 16 can be downloaded for the latest software. It is therefore remarkable that Apple does release an iOS 12 update. Why is Apple doing this?

Many phones still run on iOS 12

Apple will stop providing updates for older devices after a certain time. For example, the iPhone 6 got stuck on iOS 12 update. However, the iPhone 6 was a very popular – if not the most popular – iPhone, so quite a few people still use the device. These devices have had iOS 12 as the last iOS update:

Due to the popularity of the devices, it is quite possible that they will still be used a lot in 2023.
