Apple says 20% of materials used in its products are recycled

Apple delivers new details on its strategy to reduce its CO2 footprint, which should take it to carbon neutrality by 2030. Recycling is one of the key points of this “green” strategy and Apple has made great progress on the subject For years. Apple announces that it has introduced GOLD recycling certification and doubled its use of recycled Tungsten, Cobalt and rare earths.

If we are to believe the 2022 Environmental Progress Report just released by Apple, almost 20% of all materials used in Apple products in 2021 came from recycling. In detail, 59% of all the aluminum used in 2021 in Apple products comes directly from recycling, as for plastic, it only accounts for 4% of the packaging produced, a reduction in the volume of plastic of the order of 75% in 5 years!

The report also notes the following points:

4% certified recycled rare earth elements, a significant increase since Apple introduced recycled rare earth elements in its devices.
30% recycled tin certified, with all new iPhone, iPad, AirPods and Mac devices containing 100% recycled tin in the solder of their main logic boards.
13% certified recycled cobalt, used in iPhone batteries that can be dismantled by Apple’s Daisy recycling robot and put back on the market.

These figures remain very insufficient, but we can bet that no competitor of Apple is doing better at present.
