Apple launches new smart home devices and HomePods

Within a year, Apple will release a new, improved version of the HomePod. Apple insider Mark Gurman reports this. Apple is also said to be working on two smart home devices.

Read on after the ad.

Improved HomePod

In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman has some news about the HomePod mini. Apple is considering updating the smart speaker, which was announced in October 2020 and has only been officially available in the Netherlands since March this year. He does not report details about the improvements to the speaker, but according to Gurman it is unlikely that it will be something ‘super impressive’.

Additionally, Apple is trying to revive the original HomePod, which was discontinued in March 2021. The original HomePod is a lot bigger and the upgraded version gets a touchscreen on the top, with new touch interactions. It also has an updated S8 processor. Gurman expects the HomePod to appear in early 2023. It remains to be seen whether the speaker is also for sale in the Netherlands.

Smart home products

Gurman also reports that Apple is working on new smart home products. One is a device that combines a speaker, Apple TV, and FaceTime camera.

The second smart home product is a kind of hybrid of the iPad and HomePod. The tablet is connected to the speaker with a robot arm. Gurman expects at least one of these two smart home products to launch in late 2023 or early 2024.
