Apple comes with a foldable screen (and it’s not what you expect)

After years of rumours, Apple seems to be coming out with the first bendable screen, but not for the iPhone or iPad. It is the MacBook that gets a folding screen.

Apple is working on a foldable MacBook

Contrary to the ongoing rumors for a foldable iPhone, it seems that Apple is working on a foldable screen for a MacBook. According to the latest rumors, Apple is working on a 20.25-inch screen, which is only 15.3 inches when folded.

This way, your new MacBook is (much) more compact to take with you. Little else is known about the design of the new laptop, but with a foldable screen, Apple is likely to overhaul the entire design.

Foldable screen not expected until 2026

The introduction of a folding screen is not expected until 2026. Before Apple wants to introduce the folding screen, the company plans to bring an OLED screen to all devices. At the moment, only the Apple Watch and the iPhone are equipped with an OLED screen, so it will be a few years before this is extended to all Apple devices.

The iPads are expected to be equipped with an OLED screen in 2024, followed by a MacBook in 2025 or 2026. Only after this will Apple venture into the foldable screen, so it will have to wait a while.

Will a foldable iPad come sooner?

Apple not only seems to be working on a folding MacBook, but is also preparing to make a folding iPad. The iPad will then have a 16-inch screen, which must be foldable. The iPad with the folding screen then becomes a possible replacement for the iPad mini.

The foldable iPad will come (much) earlier than a foldable MacBook, possibly as early as 2023. Apple could use the foldable iPad as a good test before releasing a foldable MacBook. If this iPad is a success, both technologically and economically, releasing a foldable MacBook is also a lot more attractive.

First iPhone Fold is already here

The first iPhone Fold was released a few weeks ago, although Apple did not do this itself. A team of YouTubers released the iPhone V (as they call it themselves), which can be closed. The foldable iPhone even came with a new iOS version, so that the phone can actually be used.

Whether Apple will actually launch the first foldable iPad in the short term is doubtful, but it is almost certain that Apple is working on a foldable screen.

Samsung previously predicted that Apple will introduce an iPad Fold in 2024. So it seems only a matter of time before Apple’s first foldable screen is released.
