Apple announces country-by-country rollout for user photo analysis
Apple’s system for analyzing photos and messages from users to fight child pornography will not land everywhere at the same time. The manufacturer announces today that the process will be done country by country.
The first country that will have the analysis of photos and images by Apple will be on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, namely the United States. Apple specified today to several media that he will review any potential global expansion of the system after conducting a legal assessment. Apple did not provide a timeline for the global expansion of the system, should such a step be taken.
This system has been widely criticized by several people and organizations. Security researchers believe that this position of Apple goes against its rules of respect for privacy. There are also criticisms coming from whistleblower Edward Snowden and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). In particular, the two believe that Apple could analyze other content on users’ iPhones in the future.
In any case, it will be interesting to see how it goes in Europe. Will Apple succeed in finding an agreement at the European level to deploy its system in all the countries of the continent at once? Or will the company have to negotiate on a case-by-case basis to have an agreement with France, an agreement with Germany, an agreement with Italy, etc.? There is no answer at this time.
