MacBook Pro design: Apple admits its mistakes
Apple has made some notable design choices in recent years, which have attracted a lot of criticism. In particular, the striking changes to the MacBooks have not gone down well.
The most famous example of this is the butterfly keyboard. In the constant battle to make the laptops as thin as possible, Apple has invented a new kind of keyboard that takes up less space. Fine, except that a small piece of dust can destroy a key.
Also with other choices, the design seemed more important than the convenience of the consumer. For example, more and more ports were removed, so that you now have to work with a dongle to connect things. A shiny Touch Bar replaced the handy function keys and MagSafe also had to die, because the charging cable was not thin enough.
Irritation points solved
It’s not often that Apple rolls back design choices. For example, you still have to charge the Magic Mouse 2 via a port on the bottom of the mouse, so you can’t use it while you’re charging.
With the newly unveiled MacBook Pro, Apple is finally reversing a lot of things to bring back a laptop the company can be proud of. All the above irritation points have been resolved.
The butterfly keyboard has already been removed in the latest MacBook Air, but the troubled part can no longer be found in the MacBook Pro either. The Touch Bar is gone and makes way for the much better function keys.
There are also finally more ports on the side of the laptop, such as an HDMI connection, three Thunderbolt ports and even space for an SD card. MagSafe is back too, so you can trip over your charging cable without taking your expensive laptop with you in your trap.
Step back as progress
Normally, a step back is seen as a step backwards, which means that many companies do not dare to take that step. The fact that Apple is now doing this shows that the company admits to having made mistakes.
That’s great if you’re in the market for a new MacBook, but not so great if you already have one. Because if you’ve bought an Apple laptop in recent years, you’re left with a keyboard that doesn’t type well, a dongle that you always have to take with you and those function keys remain a loss.
These are expensive devices and for many an investment in themselves and their work. It would be great if Apple could accommodate these people, for example with an extra trade-in discount on a new MacBook. Such a laptop can become quite expensive.
