This is how you survive driving in the heat

During the past summer months we have experienced that heat waves in the Netherlands have become the rule rather than the exception. We speak of a heat wave if a temperature of at least 25 degrees is reached for at least five days in a row, of which it is at least thirty days. There have been almost as many heat waves in the 21st century as there have been in the entire 20th century. We will therefore increasingly have to deal with higher temperatures in the summer, also in the car. Read our favorite occasions with climate control in this article.

With these 4 tips you can survive a car ride in the heat

Getting into a sweltering car is absolutely no fun. Fortunately, climate control helps to get it up to temperature quickly. What else can you do to avoid getting caught up in the heat while driving? We have listed the most important tips for you:

Tip #1 Park your car in a shady spot

Are you looking for a parking space? If possible, park your car where there is shade. Note that the sun rotates. Do you want to make sure that your car is not warming up in the blazing sun? Then look for a parking garage.

Tip #2 Ventilate well before departure

If it is hot in your car, it is important to air your car well before departure. The worst heat can disappear as a result. Is most of the heat coming out of your car? Close all windows and, if your vehicle has one, turn on your air conditioning or climate control. With some electric cars it is even possible to switch on the air conditioning in advance, ideal!

Tip #3 Ventilation position on recirculation

Don’t have air conditioning? Then it is advisable to set the ventilation position to recirculation. With this position, warm air is no longer drawn in from the outside. Instead, the cooler air is circulated inside your car.

Tip #4 Check the engine

Do not only check whether you are comfortable in your car, but also consider the temperature of your engine. If your engine overheats, you can see this on the temperature gauge. Is this in red? Then stop driving immediately and park your car. This is an important warning that you should not ignore. You can also recognize an overheated engine by the coolant light coming on on the dashboard.
