answer your recycling questions with EcoScan

Is there a deposit on your plastic bottle? What are you supposed to do with an empty drink carton? There is an answer to these kinds of questions and you will find that answer the fastest with EcoScan. This App of the Week is all about the app, which provides valuable advice on how to recycle something.

EcoScan

At the moment, EcoScan is still a fairly small-scale app: 100,000 scans are performed annually, but that could be quite a bit more. There are so many products that many a person has no idea how to separate. With this app, whether you use an account or not, you can take pictures of the barcode of a package and learn which bin it should go in. Tea bags, for example, are annoying.

What also doesn’t help is that they always had to be disposed of with the residual waste, but are now also allowed in the organic waste bin. An app like EcoScan can help you do new things you thought you were always good at. Although you have to bear in mind that you scan such a tea box every once in a while. EcoScan is not the most beautiful app in terms of design, but that is not so disturbing: as long as it does what it is supposed to do, namely tell you how to separate waste.

Saving EcoCoins

EcoScan has recently started doing more. It also makes it possible to save for discounts if you are more involved in recycling in the form of EcoCoins. A new concept, for which you have to watch two commercials of 30 seconds each after a scan. One advertisement was for Marktplaats, which is indeed a smart and sustainable initiative. The other is for Park Mobile. That was weird in two ways. Firstly because that app is now called differently (and that was mentioned above, but in the video itself you still saw the old one) and secondly because driving a car is simply not that sustainable. So that is a pity.

After watching the commercial you will receive 0.01 EcoCoin. That’s not much: in the shop you need 3.50 for a 5 euro gift voucher from Bol, Amazon, Coolblue, Mediamarkt, VVV or BeautyCadeau. A good initiative, because this inspires even more to do scans and who knows, you might learn about a product that you always thought was allowed with the paper that it doesn’t belong there at all. You can also use euros in the EcoScan shop, but then only to show less advertising (2.99 euros) or to perform more scans per day (also 2.99 euros). There is normally a limit of a few scans per day.

Local authority

You can also add your municipality in the app, because there are municipalities that work with EcoScan. Unfortunately not that of the writer of this piece, so it has not been tested. Yet it is also a very pleasant app to use without adding your municipality. He knows exactly how to remove those question marks that you have with certain packaging. Not all barcodes are known yet, but you can also add them manually. You will then receive extra EcoCoins.

During Valentine’s Day next Tuesday, the EcoCoins will be doubled, so if you want to give this app a try, it will be extra interesting on Tuesday. Although the goal of this handy app is of course to let you recycle as much as possible and to learn about recycling.
