Another boring Pixel with minimal improvements

The Pixel family from Google has grown with another novelty. Pixel 6 with the new Tensor processor is not expected. The American giant officially introduced the new Google Pixel 5a 5G yesterday. And a lot of news compared to its predecessor really doesn’t come.

Google Pixel 5a is a slight improvement on last year’s model

The novelty takes the vast majority of parameters from the Pixel 4a 5G model. That means there’s still the same boring design, a processor, a fingerprint sensor on the back and a hole for a selfie camera right on the screen.

Some changes would be found in the lobby. The display and at the same time the whole smartphone have grown a bit. The diagonal of the display is 6.34 ″ compared to last year’s 6.2 ″ (still only 60 Hz). However, you will only notice this when directly comparing the two models.

The construction is no longer made of polycarbonate, but is made of metal. It is a pleasant improvement that you will not feel in your hand, because the body of the novelty is again covered with a special layer that is pleasant to the touch. You don’t have to worry about capturing fingerprints at all.

It attracts mainly with a battery, but also offers water resistance

The best improvement, or the parameter that interested us the most, is the battery capacity. This increased from 3885 mAh to 4680 mAh. The Pixel 4a 5G already offered very good endurance thanks to excellent optimization and an economical processor. It will be even better here.

Another pleasant novelty is a waterproof body with IP67 certification. 5G support is a matter of course, but since Google does not officially sell its products in Slovakia, operators will probably not be interested in optimizing this device for their networks.

We can traditionally rely on high-quality photographs, which will provide old, well-known sensors that should already be retired. Google is making the most of them again. Specifically, it is a 12.2 MP main sensor with f / 1.7 brightness and optical image stabilization, which is complemented by a 16 MP ultra-wide sensor with an angle of view of 107 degrees.

Pixels used to offer unlimited storage for Google photos in full quality, but according to information from the Android Police portal, Pixel 5a will not get it. No wonder, the Pixel 4 series and newer no longer have free storage. It is a pity.

In addition to the smartphone itself, Google also introduced new covers for Pixel 5a. They feature a minimalist design and will be available in 4 colors. You can pre-order them now in the Google Store for $ 29.

The news will go on sale on August 26, Google writes on its blog that its price is set at $ 449. It will certainly be in the European centuries, but we do not know the price in euros.

Competition

There are quite a few interesting facilities with a similar price. It is worth mentioning the successful OnePlus Nord 2, which offers better overall parameters. The dipstick has a frequency of 90 Hz, the processor is newer and the main camera has a resolution of up to 50 MP. However, the photos will be better served by Pixel. Pixel also has the advantage of excellent software support and water resistance.

There is also competition from our own ranks. The Google Pixel 4a 5G has almost the same features, except for water resistance, a slightly smaller display and the materials from which the construction is made. It will compete especially with a more attractive price.
