Android security update January 2023 brings 61 patches

Google has released a new security update for the Android operating system. We also see a number of fixes specific to the Pixel devices. In total, there are 61 patches that the January update brings.

The first security patch of 2023 is a fact. Google releases a security update for Android every month, and that will continue this year. With security update January 2023, the necessary fixes for Android will be rolled out again. In total, Google addresses 61 vulnerabilities in the system. By the way, these are not for all devices. Also with the January patch, a distinction is made between, for example, the components used, such as the processor of the device. For example, some patches are only for devices with a chipset from Qualcomm or from Unisoc or another manufacturer.

Pixel

Google also regularly releases additional patches for its own Pixel devices. These are various improvements for the smartphones. The new features that the January security update brings are listed below.

Security (all devices):

  • The most up to date Android security patches for your device.

Audio (Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 7, 7 Pro):

  • Added support for Spatial Audio for certain devices and accessories

Biometrics (Pixel 6a, 7, 7 Pro):

  • Additional improvements for fingerprint recognition and response in certain conditions.

Bluetooth issues (all devices):

  • That occasionally prevented certain Bluetooth Low Energy devices or accessories from pairing or reconnecting.
  • That prevented audio from playing over certain headphones or accessories while connected under certain conditions.

Camera issue (Pixel 7, 7 Pro):

  • That occasionally caused captured photos to appear corrupted or distorted while zoomed in.

Display & Graphics issue (Pixel 7, 7 Pro):

  • Occasionally prevented the display from waking or appearing turned off when the device was turned on.

User interface issues (all devices):

  • The device would occasionally display in landscape layout when it was held in portrait mode.

The update is now rolling out to the Pixel devices. If you can download the update, you will receive a notification on your smartphone.
