Android: Google allows the Parler social network to return to the Play Store

The application of Parler, a social network which is considered controversial, was able to return to Android with Google which accepted the application on its Play Store. It had been removed in January 2021 from the Play Store and the Apple App Store following the intrusion at the Capitol in Washington.

You should know that Parler had much more flexible moderation policies than other social networks. At the time of removal, it was precisely this policy that Google’s Play Store team invoked to justify the removal of the Android app. In the 18 months since that removal, Parler users had to manually download the Android app, while Apple fully reinstated the social network’s iOS app in May 2021. Apple’s decision last year The latter was based on Parler’s assurance to detect and moderate hate speech.

Today, more than a year after returning to iOS, Google has given the green light to make Parler once again readily available on Android through the Play Store. The social network team claims that this is a new version of the Android app, bringing it in line with the iOS version.

In a statement to AxiosGoogle recalls that the policy of the Play Store is to authorize any application that complies with the rules and guidelines of the platform, in particular the obligation to moderate content:

As we have stated for a long time, applications can appear on Google Play provided that they comply with the Google Play development guidelines.

All apps on Google Play that offer user-generated content (UGC) must implement rigorous moderation practices that prohibit objectionable content, provide an internal system for reporting objectionable UGC, take against this UGC as appropriate, and remove or block abusive users who violate the Terms of Service and/or the Application Rules of Use.
