Android Car has a hidden Easter Egg with a link to the hit 80’s

Easter eggy (Easter eggs) have been a common and funny part of Android and Google applications for years. The latest one was found in the platform Android Auto. The information was provided by the portal AndroidPolice.

Although Google publishes changes to Android Auto updates, you’d be hard-pressed to find a mention of the Easter egg. This particular one was discovered by a Reddit user who shared a video of his activation in his own car. It is unlikely that many users will come across it without knowing where to look.

The Musical Easter Egg itself is a 1987 video of Rick Astley’s hit Never Gonna Give You Up. This is not the first time this 80’s hit has been used as a joke. The internet is like an easter egg according to the portal AndroidPolice used since 2008.

Access to it requires Android Auto 7.0 and developer mode enabled. Android Auto 7.0 began distribution through the Google Play store in mid-October. If you don’t have it yet and want to try it out, you can install it via the latest APK file.

How to activate Easter Egg in Android Auto:

First steps on your smartphone:

  1. Android Auto settings
  2. Go to the bottom of the menu, tap the system version 10 times to enable developer mode
  3. Click on the three-dot menu at the top right
  4. Developer settings
  5. Change the application mode to Developer.

The following steps in the car:

  1. Go to the Android Auto app menu on the main screen
  2. All car apps (if not available, make sure it’s selected in the Custom launcher section in Android Auto settings)
  3. In all car apps, you then need to scroll down to “UX Prototype”, tap the app twice and the Easter egg should appear.
