Android Auto shows very large icons? You’re not the only one

Android Auto is currently plagued by a number of bugs and the next bug is just around the corner. Some Android Auto users see very large icons in the interface, making operation of the system almost impossible. Fortunately, Google is aware of it.

Android Auto bug

There have been complaints on the Android Auto support forum (via 9to5Google) regarding Android 12 and Android Auto. The problem causes the Android Auto interface to become incredibly ‘bloated’, making the icons and taskbar almost unusable.

You can see in the photo below that the ‘Home’ button alone takes up a large part of the interface, and the taskbar takes up almost half of the screen. Especially that huge taskbar makes operation difficult.

We don’t know exactly what caused the bug. The issue appears to be unrelated to existing Android Auto versions and more likely to be phone related. There is a similarity to be discovered in the notifications. Android 12 seems to be the common thread. One complaint has come from a Samsung Galaxy A53 owner, but the bulk of it comes from owners of Oppo, OnePlus and Xiaomi smartphones.

  • Xiaomi Black Shark 5 Pro
  • OPPO Find X3 Neo
  • OPPO Find X3 Pro
  • OnePlus 9 Pro
  • Xiaomi 11 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy A53

Google has marked the issue as under investigation, so we expect a fix soon. Meanwhile, Google is also working on other bugs like this one.
