Android Auto gets useful new gadgets for electric cars

Android Auto already comes with the handy option of having Google Maps open on your phone while it’s connected, but more is coming. Specifically for people who already drive electrically, because newly seen functions seem to apply to that.

Android Auto

Experts dug into the code and found that there are all sorts of features in the works. It doesn’t have to be 100 percent accurate, because sometimes Google tests or makes something that never sees the light of day, but it’s certainly an option that the features will arrive. For example, you will soon be able to manually mark your car as an electric vehicle and get the electric vehicle options within Google Maps. This includes more information about charging stations.

Google would even have created a new menu within Android Auto called ‘EV settings’ (EV = electric vehicle or electric vehicle). Within that you can select, among other things, which charging connector your vehicle uses, such as J1772, CCS or CHAdeMO. You could also see how your battery is doing, which hopefully will finally give you some more direct information within Android Auto and perhaps a little better warning that your car is hungry for new energy. However, the latter is not certain.

At SmartDroid they have already seen the new option for electric cars within Android Auto and below you can see on the German screenshots how that will look in that language:

Whether these functions will really come to Android Auto, that remains to be seen, but it would be good if more attention was paid to electric driving within this system. In the Netherlands, more and more people are converting, so there is a greater need for information about electric charging.
