Android 15 will probably be called Vanilla Ice Cream

Android versions used to have fun names, like Oreo, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Cupcake. One day Android decided to get rid of it, but secretly still gives Android versions the names of desserts and other sweets. For example, Android 14 is called Upside Down Cake, but what’s the name of the Android version coming next year? Android 15 appears to be Vanilla Ice Cream.

Vanilla Ice Cream

Hopefully the update itself is not very ‘vanilla’ (boring), although we first have to wait and see what we can expect from the Upside Down Cake that is Android 14. Does he really turn everything around? You may not have noticed, but the desserts that are chosen are not random: they have to start with a certain letter of the alphabet. So we go from the U to the V.

From 2009’s Cupcake to Pie in 2018, the working titles were always brought out and even mentioned when talking about the update. Google stopped doing that with Android 10, probably because the Q is an impossible letter (Queen’s Cake doesn’t sound that impossible, though, does it?). But of course the company continued to use the sweets internally as a working title for the versions. Mishaal Rahman indicates that it will be Vanilla Ice Cream for 2024.

Android 15

Although vanilla ice cream is seen as quite boring, the name never really says anything about what to expect from the Android update. In addition, we first have a completely different Android update to devour, namely the Upside Down Cake, the first taste of which appeared last month. For example, it appears that the focus is very much on apps and, among other things, limiting their sideloading. Apps made for Android 5.1 Jellybean or an older version can no longer be installed on a phone.

However, it will be a while before Android 14 comes out. Let alone that vanilla ice cream that awaits us in 2024. And what would the one of 2025 be called? We think waffle cone. What do you think? Leave it in the comments.
