‘An ambulance is now coming to school for Merel (8)’

When the school calls, eighty scenarios flash through your mind, none of them good. Fortunately, disaster is not always the case. Such as with Mieke (39), mother of Merel (15) and Xavi (3).

“’An ambulance is now coming to school for Merel.’ It is impossible to describe what goes through your mind during such a telephone conversation.

The teacher of my then eight-year-old daughter sounded worried. Merel had just passed out that morning and it took a long time before she was approachable. The doctor who had been called in did not trust it and ordered an ambulance. I drove to school with screeching tires, where I found an ambulance worker next to Merel: ‘Merel says that the teacher told me about her thrombosis leg and that she then became unwell.’

Serious? And then they call an ambulance? Couldn’t they have checked with her first? Both Merel and I absolutely cannot stand blood and gory stories. That’s why she fainted. She had only just entered this primary school and apparently we hadn’t told you not to share Entrance East stories with us.
