Amazon’s new boss: who is he and where is he from?
Amazon has had a new boss since July 5, 2021: Andy Jassy is now taking over the helm instead of the founder and previous CEO Jeff Bezos. Who is this man?
On July 5, 1994, the American founded Jeffrey Preston “Jeff” Bezos (* 1964) the company Amazon – the rest is IT history. The inconspicuous online bookstore Amazon became a huge marketplace and global megacorporation, which together with Google (Alphabet), Facebook, Apple and Microsoft forms the so-called “Big Five” of technology companies.
Andy Jassy is the new Amazon CEO
In early 2021, Bezos announced that – after 27 years at the helm of Amazon – he would give up his position as CEO (Chief Executive Officer). Bezo’s successor was Andrew R. “Andy” Jassy (* 1968) – so he is the new “boss of Amazon”.
Andy Jassy is nowhere near as well known to the public as his predecessor Bezos, who makes headlines both as the “richest person in the world” and as a “private spaceman”.
But Jassy is not a blank slate either: The New York-born manager studied business administration at the elite University of Harvard and has been working at Amazon since 1997. Jassys Annual salary at Amazon was recently a manageable 175,000 US dollars – but there are still more shares Valued at over $ 200 million (Source: CNBC). This means that he is remunerated a little exorbitantly better than an Amazon employee in logistics (approx. 12 euros / hour) – but still does not play in the league of his predecessor Bezos, whose fortune is estimated at over 200 billion US dollars.
What did Jassy do before that?
Industry experts have known him for a long time, because Jassy was previously for Amazon Web Services (AWS) active, since April 2016 in the role of the division’s CEO – and extremely successful. The department is responsible for the booming cloud business (server, network, services), which with 54 billion dollars in annual sales (2020) is already a giant in itself and currently even a global leader.
Under Jassy, AWS recently provided half of the net profit of the entire Amazon group – in other words, “quasi a money printing machine” (according to Spiegel Netzwelt). Adam Selipsky replaced Andy Jassy’s head of Amazon AWS.
No longer Amazon boss: what is Jeff Bezos doing now?
If Jeff Bezos is no longer the CEO of Amazon since July 2021, what is he actually doing instead? He changes within his company and will Chairman of the Board of Directors. There he will be “primarily about strategic Take care of decisions, ”explains the NZZ. The day-to-day business will be handed over to Andy Jassy, but Jeff Bezos will continue to have a say in the big and long-term decisions at Amazon in the future. Obviously, he still has enough time for “other interests”, such as Flights with the spaceship “New Shepard” his company Blue Origin.
