Amazon produces green electricity that could power 5 million homes

Amazon is continuing to expand its wind power and photovoltaic systems. Last year, the company obtained a record output of 20 gigawatts. The company could theoretically supply more than five million households with green electricity.

The comparatively mild start to the year once again showed how climate change is progressing. Mitigating the worst impacts requires reducing emissions and removing greenhouse gases that have already been emitted from the atmosphere. Many large tech companies have also been committed to these goals for years.

Amazon, for example, set a new record for sustainable power generation last year. Because the US group is not active on the Internet, but now also promotes solar and wind power plants worldwide. Through new projects, the company achieved 2022 a new record in power generation: An additional 8.3 gigawatts went into the grid.

Green electricity: Amazon is expanding solar and wind power

However, Amazon isn’t exactly known for its sustainability ambitions. Many organizations accuse the group of greenwashing. At the same time, the amount of packaging waste continues to increase. Part of the reason for this was the pandemic, which led to more orders.

This trend is likely to continue rather than reverse. Around to be carbon neutral by 2040so Amazon must take countermeasures.

In addition to the purchase of electrically powered vans from the Rivian brand – by 2030 there should be 100,000 vehicles – the promotion of solar and wind power has become a relevant business area for Amazon. With the additional 8.3 gigawatts, the group now obtains renewable energy with a total output of 20 gigawatts.

Group projects are scattered around the world

Under normal circumstances, this is enough to supply several million households with energy. In the past nine years, Amazon has not only expanded its capacities in the United States, but is now involved in 301 projects in over 22 countries. The majority (237 projects) is reserved for the expansion of large solar projects.

Because with 133 new projects in eleven countries, Amazon shows that, despite heavy criticism, it is still making an important contribution to the decarbonization of power grids worldwide. It is to be hoped that the group will also push ahead with other projects in this area and that these will not fall victim to the austerity policies of the past few months.
