Amazon is preparing an application to stream sports
Amazon is developing a new application that will focus on streaming to see the different sports. According to The Informationthe online retailer will do so to continue to push investments towards its Prime Video streaming unit, which is mainly dedicated to films and series.
The company currently streams its sporting events through its Prime Video app, as well as its website. The group wants to separate its sports content from the rest of its offer, highlighting the meetings.
It comes as Amazon reviews unprofitable businesses, including cutting roles in some divisions. Amazon boss Andy Jassy pointed out that live sports was a sector that would continue to be spent even if costs were cut. It also suggested exploring ways to tap what have been heavy investments in live sport (including billions of dollars/euros in sports streaming deals) for new revenue streams.
As it stands, available sports vary by country. In France, Amazon Prime Video broadcasts 80% of Ligue 1 matches. This is an option that costs €12.99/month or €99/year, in addition to the Amazon Prime subscription. The group does not specify for the moment if it will broadcast other sports in France.
