Amazon Care has had its day – it will be over by the end of the year

Amazon has been pushing into the healthcare space for a while. But now a course correction follows, because the US group wants to stamp out its health service Amazon Care.

Amazon won’t have its until the end of July 2022 latest major acquisition in the healthcare sector announced. The healthcare provider is changing for around 3.9 billion US dollars One Medical the owner and slips under the roof of the shipping giant.

But just a few days later, the company announced that it intends to discontinue its Amazon Care health service. According to an internal memo, about the GeekWire reported.

What is Amazon Care?

Amazon Care is a kind of advice for health issues and emergency care. There are no physical locations or medical practices – the consultation takes place exclusively online.

The company tested the project in 2019 with a pilot program for employees in the region around its Seattle headquarters. Last year, the service was rolled out nationwide in the US and expanded to include people outside of the group.

Why is Amazon Care being scrapped?

The end of the healthcare service is a major course correction Amazon is making in the healthcare sector. The offer is to be discontinued by the end of the year.

Amazon justifies the decision in the internal communication with the fact that there is “not enough offer” for corporate customers. It is not about “the right long-term solution for our corporate customers”.

While our enrolled members loved many aspects of Amazon Care, for the large enterprise customers we target, the offering is not complete enough and would not work in the long term.

Is the acquisition of One Medical the reason for this decision?

According to the US group, the end of Amazon Care has nothing to do with the takeover of One Medical. The business model did not work regardless of this decision.

GeekWire on the other hand, the health tech expert quotes Chrissy Farr as saying that there “could have been potential overlaps with One Medical”. Because One Medical also offers telemedical services and sells them to companies.
