Almost one and a half million Dutch people have used ChatGPT

Chatbot ChatGPT has almost become standard vocabulary in the Netherlands. Not only is the program regularly in the news, the Dutchman also knows how to find the chatbot. From December of last year to March 2023, almost one and a half million Dutch people visited the website. The use of ChatGPT is especially popular among young people.

Especially popular among young people

In total we are talking about 1,418,000 Dutch people, or 10% of people aged 13 and older. Divided into age cohorts, we find by far the majority of those users in the cluster aged 13 to 24. 19% of people of that age visited the website in the aforementioned time period.

When looking at daytime activities, the largest group consists of students aged 18 to 28. Nearly a quarter of these people have reached ChatGPT’s site at one time or another. They also use the chatbot more often than others. More than half of the users have used the chatbot more than incidentally. 22% of this group even visited the chatbot on more than 6 days.

ChatGPT used more on desktop than app

In a society where owning a smartphone is becoming more and more a necessity, especially among young people, you would expect that the latest technological toy is also mainly used via the telephone. But that turns out not to be the case. Two-thirds of ChatGPT usage was via desktop or laptop. The reason is probably that the use of ChatGPT is mainly done when writing texts, and people prefer not to do that on the smartphone for the time being.

The number of users is declining

Still, the future prospects for OpenAI are not all rosy. For the first time, the number of users that the chatbot manages to reach has fallen substantially. The number of downloads of the app on the App Store also decreases. ChatGPT has been available to the public for about seven months now. So it may just be that the novelty has worn off a bit. Or is there something structural going on?

Generative “AI” programs are the latest hype in tech land. Where the news cycle was drowned in NFT news last year, in 2023 the tech start-ups are trying to convince us that the future is “AI”. NFTs, meanwhile, have become completely irrelevant. We will see whether “AI” will still be relevant next year, but it is certain that it is no longer a hip new thing. The average consumer is now used to the fact that what you see on your screen may be a mixed bag of (often stolen) human work.

In June, ChatGPT was used 10% less than the previous month. That does not mean that 10% fewer people visited the chatbot. We are talking here purely about times when the bot was used. In terms of unique users, the counter decreased by 6%. In raw numbers, ChatGPT remains a crowd pleaser. In total, ChatGPT was visited one and a half billion times last month. The decline on the Apple app is greater at 38%. Possibly using the chatbot is a task that is more suitable for a desktop. Whether it’s a temporary dip or the beginning of the end for ChatGPT is hard to say at the moment. Time will tell.

Use of chatbot ChatGPT is not without controversy.
