Airline sells tickets for first electric plane flight

The Scandinavian airline SAS wants to realize the dream of electric aircraft for passengers make reality. The company’s first aircraft should take off by 2028 at the latest. Tickets for the flight have already been sold.

With a view to the mobility of the future, classic aircraft are more likely to be a thing of the past. Because they still cause a lot of emissions. At the same time, these arise directly in the atmosphere. This makes absorption by trees or the sea almost impossible. But how can airlines counteract this?

In addition to using an ever more economical fleet, future technologies such as hydrogen or batteries could play a greater role. However, these approaches pose major challenges due to their weight. The Scandinavian airline SAS now wants to have overcome this and offers the first scheduled flight with an electric aircraft.

SAS is selling 30 seats on the electric plane

Meanwhile, the first all-electric flight is scheduled to start in Sweden, Norway or Denmark and take place in 2028. For the trip, SAS offers 30 tickets, which the airline sells for 1,946 kroner (about 260 euros).

The award has a historical background, as the airline was founded in 1946 by a Danish, a Swedish and a Norwegian airline.

Basically, SAS says it wants to remain a pioneer and sustainably reduce emissions by using electrically powered aircraft. Because the company also wants to achieve its own climate targets by 2050.

All tickets sold in advance are sold out

For this to work, SAS relies on an aircraft model from Heart Aerospace, a Swedish start-up. The company’s technology seems to have potential, as other international companies – such as American Airlines – also rely on Heart Aerospace. So far, the company speaks of 230 pre-orders for the electric E-30 aircraft.

However, it is still unclear which route the plane will take. Because SAS has not yet worked out a roadmap until 2028, so it needs some flexibility. At least the interest is there. With the advance sale on June 2nd, all tickets have already been sold.
