After 70,000 hours of training: Minecraft AI probably plays better than you

It might not appear at first glance, but Minecraft is a lot more complex than you think. There are hardly any limits for creative minds in this game, but in order to be able to implement all this, you have to know a lot about the game. An artificial intelligence has acquired the knowledge with countless hours of video material.

Minecraft: AI can now play the game alone

OpenAI, a company dedicated to the research and use of artificial intelligence, has set itself the task of developing a video training algorithm. After years, a team made it. With the help of the algorithm, your project interacts with the game, by recognizing situations and using the same key and mouse movementswhich it copied from human players.

To achieve this, the AI was exposed to hours and hours of Minecraft videos. Now the artificial intelligence is able to independently carry out basic actions such as chopping down trees, making planks, swimming, hunting and much more. Thanks for more work the AI can now even craft diamond toolswhich takes a long time even for an experienced player.

Various players were commissioned to record their game

The videos the AI watched were no ordinary YouTube videos. These aren’t informative enough for the purpose to serve as a guide, and you rarely see the key and mouse movements.

The company OpenAI therefore commissioned players to record and label the basic Minecraft skills. Around 70,000 hours of footage were then converted into the languagethat the AI understands: manually entered data.

So far, artificial intelligence has only been tested with Minecraft, but OpenAI is confident that the system is adaptable enough to learn general computer usage.
