affordable tablet with 90Hz screen

Xiaomi has proposed a new budget tablet. The Redmi Pad works with a 90Hz screen and four speakers with Dolby Atmos support. The tablet is available from 279 euros and has special functions that are strongly focused on video meetings.

Xiaomi Redmi Pad

Xiaomi is currently already selling its mid-range Xiaomi Pad 5 tablet in our market, but it is now also adding a cheaper model to the lineup. Xiaomi makes this known during a launch event in the German city of Munich. It does so under the Redmi brand, which is known for its budget-friendly phones.

The tablet has a metal housing and is equipped with a 10.61 inch LCD screen. Xiaomi opted for a 90Hz here and so the Redmi Pas can display smoother animations than most tablets in this price segment. The resolution of the screen is 2000 x 1200 pixels. According to Xiaomi, the screen has been developed in such a way that it protects the eyes when you use it in the dark.

The Redmi Pad also has a MediaTek Helio G99 processor, which is a chipset for budget devices, and we’ve seen it before in the Poco M5, which we tested last week. The tablet is available in three models: 3 GB/64 GB, 4 GB/128 GB and 4 GB/128 GB. The battery of the Redmi Pad is an 8,000 mAh one, and the box contains a 22.5W fast charger. Although the tablet can actually charge with a power of 18W.

Equipped for video meetings

There is an 8 MP camera on the front and back, but the selfie camera of the Redmi Pad is something special. It takes images at a wide angle of 105 degrees. In addition, Xiaomi uses its so-called FocusFrame technology with which it automatically places you in the middle of the frame during video meetings. That only works in select apps, and Xiaomi unfortunately does not clarify in which applications it works exactly. As soon as we have more information about this, we will adjust this article.

Furthermore, Xiaomi reports that the Redmi Pad runs on Android 12 and a version of MIUI that is adapted to tablets. What that exactly means is not immediately clear, but the Redmi Pad does not work with Android 12L, the version of Android that comes with important optimizations for tablets. We do expect that the tablet will receive the update later, because it is entitled to two years of Android updates and three years of security patches.

Finally, the four stereo speakers are a striking feature, and they support the sound effects of Dolby Atmos. It is noteworthy that it appears without a 3.5 mm audio jack. We don’t often see that with tablets.
