A hundred European cities commit to carbon neutrality by 2030

Climate change has become a major concern for decision-makers in this world, at least for those who still have a shred of conscience and scientific rationality. The European Commissionalready up to speed on privacy issues, just published project details “Smart and climate-neutral cities”, which lists the European cities committed to carbon neutrality by 2030. Nearly 400 cities had submitted an application to join this project, but the Commission only retained the applications of 112 European cities. the greenwashing is not dead…

These 112 cities agreed to sign a “Climate City Contract” which serves as a commitment to a carbon neutrality objective by 2030 last carat. 9 French cities have had their ecological transition file accepted, namely Angers, Bordeaux, Dijon, Dunkirk, Grenoble, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes and Paris. We also note that France is one of the best represented countries in the Europe of 27 knowing in addition that a dozen selected cities are located in countries bordering the EU (such as Reykjavík, Istanbul or Glasgow for example).

Participation in Climate City Contract also translates into financial aid. Thus, 360 million euros in aid will be distributed between the various participating cities, an amount to which must of course be added the massive investments of many private investors. There is an urgent need to act: the Commission’s report recalls that “Cities cover about 3% of the earth, but they produce more than 70% of its greenhouse gas emissions”. And by 2050, 85% of Europe’s population will live in urban areas…
