Is Apple required to equip the iPhone 14 with USB-C?
There is a possibility that Apple, under strong pressure, will opt for USB-C with the iPhone 14. Finally.
When Apple preaches about the climate and the environment, it always feels a bit ambivalent. After all, the American tech company from Cupertino is itself stubborn by equipping the iPhone with a Lightning input. While the vast majority of smartphones today have USB-C. That means an extra cable and therefore extra waste. And that is bad for the environment.
If Apple doesn’t give in, maybe a new law will. The European Commission has suggested making an obligation for smartphone manufacturers to provide phones in the EU with USB-C. If this rule is passed, Apple will not be able to sell a new iPhone with Lightning input in Europe. Of course, the tech company won’t let this get that far.
Under pressure from Europe, there is a chance that Apple will still integrate USB-C, perhaps next year with the iPhone 14. For the time being, it is still a proposal from the EU. Nothing has yet been put on paper to actually put this law into effect. So wait and see. The obligation doesn’t even sound that bad. You should have enough USB-C cables at home. It would be nice if you as an iPhone user can also charge the device in this way. (via Bloomberg)
