Novel AI is supposed to diagnose dementia using a brain scan

Artificial intelligence is becoming more and more powerful. A few decades ago, the possible uses of algorithms were still very limited, nowadays algorithms offer almost unlimited possibilities. Research has now also grasped this and uses machines and AI systems in everyday life. Scientists have now found a way to diagnose dementia with a single scan of the brain.

The system comes from researchers at Cambridge University and can detect signs of dementia before the first symptoms appear. Previous approaches have been based on cognitive tests and several scans of the brain, but this takes just under four to 12 weeks.

The new AI approach is now to be tested in clinical studies for suitability for everyday use, with the computer looking for patterns in scans that the typical neurologist cannot detect. The results are then linked to patient data from a database and finally a diagnosis is made.

The advantage of the new treatment method is that dementia can be treated at an early stage, the disease can be slowed down and the patient is given more time in a livable condition. Although the results so far are promising, the researchers ask not to have too great expectations of the system. 500 patients taking part in the first clinical study should put it to the test first.

Own opinion:

Artificial intelligence is already helping us in everyday life and can become a decisive factor in medicine. Often diseases can be recognized based on certain patterns, the computer usually manages this more efficiently and does not get tired even after 100 diagnoses. I am therefore curious to see what the new development in dementia early detection and treatment will bring.
